Activity:
ReplyDeleteBased on the description of Jonathan Edwards's personality, I almost get the sense that he would be a presidential candidate for the Republican Party. This reading paints Edwards to be a radical, and I therefore imagine him as the type of fiery preacher who today would take a stand on gun laws, immigration, and threats of terrorism, but also strike fear into the hearts of many with his views. The Great Awakening was a period of charismatic religious revival, so in that sense, I feel as though Edwards could be considered a leader. Regardless, the message behind "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" would seem frightening to many people, and Edwards therefore possesses the stereotype of a "holier than thou" attitude and is an extremist when it comes to religious perspectives.

Upon reading the brief description of Jonathan Edwards, I think in today's world he would be disgusted with the other various religions, or lack thereof, that people in America practice. America's incarceration rate is also extremely high, so he may assume that our country has too many "non-believers" to be successful. Immediately I can stereotype him as a strict religious man with a closed mind to religious freedom. I think that as a scholar and journalist his reporting and teaching would have been biased and maybe even exaggerated to prove his religion's superiority.

Johnathan Edwards today might be considered over-religious because of his strong association with the church. I stereotype him as the type of person who is willing to do anything to get people to side with him. No matter how far he would have to go, he would not stop at agreeing to disagree with someone. I think of him like this because when he was alive he would use people's fear to get them to side with him.
