Activity: Using transition words such as "first of all," "secondly," "also," "finally," and "lastly" provide a clear sense of movement from one point to another in a piece of writing. In addition, if the final sentence in a particular paragraph relates back to the thesis, it helps to make that paragraph seem more complete and allows the writer to transition into their next point. I am not entirely sure what the best type of transitions would be in the middle of paragraphs, except possibly anecdotal stories or statistics that allow the writer to digress from one aspect of what they are trying to say into either something deeper or more general. In addition, when writing an essay explaining rhetorical strategies, if a writer is combining two strategies into a single paragraph, they can make it clear that they are moving from one strategy to another by stating, "The author uses an appeal to logic to connect to the reader..." and then later, "The author utilizes this appeal to contribute to a ______ tone..." This will make an essay seem less choppy and more connected, establishing a general flow between paragraphs, and even the material within paragraphs.
