Poe :)

adumbrate- to foreshadow vaguely
alacrity- a quick and cheerful readiness to do something

Why do you think Poe ended his story with the main character being saved?  Think of Gothic elements, the time period, and the message that could have been behind the decision.

  1. Adumbrate - The dark clouds in the story adumbrated the misfortunes the protagonist was about to experience.

Alacrity - The thief prepared for his next job with great alacrity.

The better question is why wouldn't Poe save the main character. The man suffered too much, I mean give the man a break. Torture a guy for hours, you can at least cut him some slack and give it a happy ending. Obviously Poe is being a nice guy by having him rescued.

  2. Many of Poe's stories adumbrate what will happen in the end of the story, but many are unpredictable.
Bob's alacrity to start working made him seem as if he was a 10 year old.

I think poe ended the story with the main character being saved because one of the main gothic elements is ressurection. The character that is being tortured would seem dead to the outside world, but then was saved after people thought he died.

    1. I think Poe saved the main character from dying because of the Gothic element heroes. The guy was tortured and knew what his fate was. Then out of no where someone saves his life. The message is to always give a second chance.

  5. Poe adumbrated in the Fall of the House of Usher that something dark and gloomy was going to happen.

The characters in Poe's writing are not full of alacrity.

Poe probably saved the main character just to let him suffer because inflicting torment and suffering is one element of Gothic literature. The message behind it could be a warning given to the character that sometime in the past, his ancestors did some mischief that he must now pay the price for it. A little teaser for something even bigger could occur in the future.

  6. In Poe's short story "The Fall of House of Usher' adumbrates that the house and family is connected in ways that cannot be described. Throughout the story Poe continues to adumbrate leading us to a 100% conclusion at the end.
Her alacrity this morning was not normal, but because she was going on a field trip and had no classes she was excited to go to school.
A common Gothic element is mystery, and Poe created that through the story by making it seem as though the man was going to die but we weren't sure how. At the end he surprises us an allows him to live which is a mystery in itself. This also relates to the time period because the man is being rescued at the end of the Spanish English war.

The students are always show alacrity when promised to go outside for class.

The ending to "The Pit and the Pendulum" was written to symbolize the Spanish inquisition and how it saved the lives of many citizens. However, this ending does not fit in with the outline of most Gothic tails because it does not leave a gruesome or gloomy feeling with the reader.

The basketball team was filled with alacrity and was ready to play in the championship game.

I think that Poe ended his story with the main character being saved because one of the Gothic elements is mystery and this added to the mystery of the story.

After hearing the word "walk," the dog waited by the front door full of excitement and alacrity.

I think Poe ended his story with the main character being saved because the Gothic time period celebrated sudden plot twists. Poe often used these, like in The House of Usher when Usher reveals he believes he has buried Madeline alive. Poe used surprise twists in his stories because the Gothic period allowed him to run free with drama and darkness.

  10. The man slipped in the shower which adumbrated the rest of his terrible Monday.

Seeing Ryan's alacrity to do his homework is the motivation for me to do better, I can't let Ryan show me up.

A common theme in Gothic literature is pain and suffering. In the story he made the main character go through this pain, but in the end it was his captors who felt the real stroke of death. It shows that no one was safe from death.

  11. When I asked my parents if I could attend a party at a friend's house, I knew they were adumbrating that it was a bad idea even though they were still letting me go.

The alacrity of my little brother helped me get up and have the energy to go outside with him.

One of the reasons that Poe may have saved the main character was to show that he was anti-religious. The main character was put in the dungeon for doing something that went against the religion in that time period, so instead of punishing the character, Poe kept him alive to show that he was anti-religious and people should not be killed for not believing in the same thing as everyone else. He also used one of the Gothic elements of feeling trapped. The main character realized that there was no way out of his cell, but Poe made it so the character was able to escape. Maybe this was to show that even though Poe usually wrote had very gruesome ideas, he still was able to have an exciting ending.

  12. Adumbrate - Refusing to believe in omens, the young man was thoroughly surprised when learning that the fox he had seen along the road that morning came to ADUMBRATE a fateful day.

Alacrity - Overwhelmed by homework and valuing my down time, I struggle to display ALACRITY when asked to complete household chores.

Honestly, I was shocked to find that Poe ended "The Pit and the Pendulum" with the main character being saved. However, I believe that this may hint at his motive behind avoiding the speaker's death. The majority of Poe's stories end in gruesome, horrific, and tragic deaths, and readers have come to expect this. Therefore, by ending the story in a different manner than usual, Poe was able to catch the readers by surprise an evoke a reaction out of them. Poe also could have included an ending devoid of peril to harshly criticize the Spanish Inquisition and express his interest in the French takeover. The ending to the story does not really align with Gothic elements, except for the fact that it is highly improbable and therefore maintains a sense of fantasy. The message behind this decision could also be viewed as one that takes aim at religious establishments, as Poe provided a result in which humanity saved the prisoner rather than God. On the other hand, Poe's message could be one with a more positive outlook, possessing an outlook at life that resonates with readers by illustrating that people can still be rescued on the verge of their own destruction. In general, by providing the ending that he did, Poe was able to maintain a sense of suspense up until the final sentence of the story, thus entertaining readers. Although the conclusion initially seemed uncharacteristic and purposeless, a closer examination reveals the true genius behind the way in which Poe abruptly brought the story to a close.

  13. The constant references to the Black Jester adumbrated his return in the fourth novel.
The young lawyer had alacrity over his first case in court.
I think Poe decided to have the main character saved in order to spite the church. The inquisition was considered a holy thing, even if it was not, and the Gothic movement focused largely on the anti religious sentiment. Having the character live would hurt the church, which Poe viewed as good.

Since I have been going on so many alacrity events I have gotten so far behind on homework I cry myself to sleep.

Poe allowed the main character to live for revenge against his torturers. The gothic element of revenge was apparent because he was near death but came back with a vengeance and I believe that is why Poe allowed him to live.

Poe allowed the prisoner to survive to allow for a more vague and unpredictable ending. The ending allows for a possible revenge story which follows Gothic themes.
