Annabel Lee

by Edgar Allan Poe
(published 1849)

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;--
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love--
   I and my Annabel Lee--
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
   Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
   Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
   Went envying her and me:--
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling
   And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we--
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea--
In her tomb by the side of the sea.

How does Poe's word choice affect his purpose??

  1. The purpose of this poem was to describe the love that he had for a woman named "Annabel Lee." His word choice helps to convey to the audience how much they really love each other. He could have been more bland in his word choice, but the descriptive words that he used really helps his purpose.

  2. Poe's primary purpose in writing this is to illustrate the principle that true love is everlasting, even though death and the circumstances in life often tear people apart. He is also representing the battle that is love, due to the fact that maintaining a sense of loyalty and staying power through the challenging circumstances of life is a chore. Poe uses words that are not too difficult for the common reader to understand, but uses distinct vocabulary at times to convey detailed descriptions and clear imagery. Examples of these words include "sepulchre," "seraphs," "dissever," and "coveted." Generally speaker, the syntax that Poe uses contributes to the tone of mourning (and yet confidence and determination) that pervades the poem at various points. The word choice includes references to "angels," "Heaven," "moon," "stars," and "night-tide," and by relating his love for Annabel Lee to inanimate, celestial, and uncontrollable objects, Poe is able to relate the emotions he is feeling to something more powerful than earthly passion.

  4. The purpose of this poem is to describe the deep affection that Poe and Annabel Lee felt for each other. The words Poe chooses affect the purpose by showing the audience how much they love each other. He uses phrases such as "Than to love than be loved by me." And compares her to the beams of light from the moon and the says that even if the stars didn't rise, he would still see her eyes.

  5. In this poem Poe is describing the woman he loves and her tragic death. His word choice depicts Annabel Lee as an angelic being whom he adores. He states that he was so in love with her that their "...love it was stronger by far than the love/Of those who were older than we..." Poe has conspiracies about why she died (saying the angels were jealous of their love), although this does not distract from his physical description of the ravishing Annabel Lee. The repetition of the word "beautiful" in the last stanza reiterates how much Poe admired and loved her. The imagery within this stanza also lets the reader imagine how Annabel Lee looked. By the end of the poem Poe is past mourning, and instead fondly remembers Annabel Lee in the world around him--he sees her in the stars, the night tide, and his dreams.

  6. I feel that the Poe's simple word choice was effective in making his purpose clear. Poe rhymed and it resembled the ABABCDCD sonnet. The purpose is ever lasting love, yet it also makes the speaker seem dark.

Purpose- Tell about the death of Annabel Lee and how she will continue to live in his memories
The word choice is simplistic and easy to understand. It allows everyone to understand what he is feeling. Words involving love and death are used throughout the poem, such as "beautoful" and "demons". The word choice indicates that Poe's and Lee's relationship was not serious. The sea symbolized the people that were mad with Pow marrying his cousin. Metaphors are used to convey Poes love to his wife.

  12. Poe's purpose is not only to tell of the death of Anabel Lee, but he explores the childlike innocence and endurance of love through death. His word choice supports this purpose as he says:

"She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love"

    and

"And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee"

  13. The main purpose of Annabel Lee was for Poe to describe his admiration for the woman. He is able to project these emotions through the circle of life. The word choice that Poe uses is successful in displaying this purpose because he uses many examples of euphony.

  14. He uses mesmerizing and enchanting words to accomplish his purpose of showing how love can withstand the "chilling winds that come from the wind" and the "demons under the sea." Even after the death of his beautiful Annabel Lee he still loved her unconditionally.

  17. Poe wrote "Annabel Lee" with the purpose of expressing the strength of true love. The strongest strategy that Poe uses in this poem is parallel structure by repeatedly stating the phrase "a kingdom by the sea" and also that he loves Annabel Lee. He used very simple word choices to support the rhythm of the poem. The word choice enhances the "love" theme, or pathos, within the poem by using emotional words such as love, envying, demons, beautiful, angels, child, killed, and darling.

  18. Poe uses very mystical sounding words which create a fairy-tale sort of feeling. This adds to the innocence and youth of their love, and the mention of the angels in heaven coveting them fits well with the ethereal feel of the poem.

  19. Pathos is used to set an emotional effect towards the love for Annabel Lee by the word choices such as killing, soul, love and the statement made about heavens angels. The purpose is to describe the love and then death of Annabel Lee. Poe's structure and word choice sets a chilling tone, making the poem seem like a horror story.
