Alone

by Edgar Allan Poe
(published 1875)

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were -- I have not seen
As others saw -- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring --
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow -- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone --
And all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone --
Then -- in my childhood -- in the dawn
Of a most stormy life -- was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still --
From the torrent, or the fountain --
From the red cliff of the mountain --
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold --
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by --
From the thunder, and the storm --
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view --

  7. I hoped that the didactic speech that the principal gave would help students to realize that they really need to study to improve their grades.

Ms. Barnhart had a very pedantic teaching style, she always had to make sure that her lesson plans had no flaws.

Anapest has three syllables with the first two being unstressed and the last one is stressed. Dactyl is a metrical foot that consists of three syllables wherein the first two syllables are stressed and the last one is unstressed.

Miss. Walton barely got any teaching done because she was pedantic with everything that she did.

The poem uses allegory towards the end. When Edgar Allan Poe talks about the storm he isn't talking about seeing it, but rather that even if everything around him is positive he still sees the negative. There is also rhyme, couplets, and imagery throughout the poem.

  9. Didactic - Although educational systems are DIDACTIC in nature, they occasionally falter at teaching effectively because of shortages in finances and limitations imposed by the state.

Pedantic - Members of the National Park Service are PEDANTIC in that they must be careful with the information that they convey to ensure it is correct and clear and concise with their descriptions of history.

Poe incorporates multiple strategies when writing this poem. First, he utilizes elision with the words "roll'd" and "pass'd" to establish interesting diction within his writing. Second, Poe includes repetition of the first few words "from the" and "as others" at the beginning of multiple lines, thus establishing a flow that contributes to a sophisticated structure. In terms of rhetorical strategies, Poe includes distinct imagery and emotional appeals in his writing to establish a connection with the reader, who begins to understand the struggle that the speaker is facing. He personifies "the mystery which binds [him] still" and sets up an analogy between a storm of thunder and lightning and the "stormy life" that began in his childhood. The fact that Poe uses hyphens in the middle of the poem serves to make his writing more choppy, but it also allows the reader to connect deeply with the words by allowing each part of the poem to have an impact. Poe is effective in achieving his purpose by incorporating a tone of distress and mourning into his poetry, illustrating how his virtual seclusion from the outside world is an source of internal warfare that is tearing him apart.

  11. The presidential theme park was designed to be both didactic and amusing.

Mrs. Smith was pedantic when grading her students' essays to make sure they were the best they could be.

Poe creates a sullen and reminiscent tone and uses many poetry tactics. At several points he uses elision with words like "pass'd" and "lov'd". He uses imagery with "red cliff" and "autumn tint of gold". Every two lines, Poe rhymes the final word like "fountain" and "mountain". Also, he uses a very distinct syntax with plenty of hyphens and throughout the poem's lines.
