There have been times where I've done things that my gut knows are wrong. Peer pressure is definitely a big factor in deciding things. Whenever you are forced by a group to make a decision, you tend to just decide with the group's answer. My experience was the same as Hughes's experience because I felt sad after reflecting what I had done and I felt guilty.

I never go against my gut, even if it comes back to bite me. I trust my gut feeling more than I trust almost anything else in this world. This often leads to me feeling convinced about ideas and ideal that are wrong or false. But whenever I am forced to go against my gut feeling, I always feel wrong inside. Going against your internal force always makes you doubt yourself and feel as if you have made the wrong choice.

During the summer of last year, a friend invited me to a Christian summer camp in which I was not sure how to respond. I wanted to go but at the same time I did not. Throughout the few weeks before camp my friend and his family manage to convince me to go to the camp. The camp at my initial impression was not what I had expected but after settling in, I started to enjoy every moment at camp. My experience with Hughes was different in a way that i didn't really wanted to go to the camp but I enjoyed my time during my time at the camp.

Since I have a reserved personality, anytime that I am invited to a social event my instant reaction is fear. Even if nothing dangerous is supposed to happen at these events, my gut tells me not to go. To get over my fear of social outings though, I need to force myself to go to these occasions. My experience was different from Hughes because instead of feeling like I was doing something bad by going to these outings, I felt like I was accomplishing a goal even though I was going against my gut feeling.

I once attended a small get together with my best friend after a school dance. I did not know anyone else besides the friend that I accompanied me to the gathering and the host.Regardless, I thought I would enjoy myself because I like to meet new people. I got the stereotypical bad feeling as soon as a certain person, a known "bad boy", showed up. Despite my gut warning me to leave, I stayed because I did not want to disappoint my friend or appear scared of the boy and what he was doing. Like Hughes in his experience, I regretted ignoring my gut feeling and was disappointed in myself for doing so.

    Activity:

I think that peer pressure plays a significant role in an individual's decision making when the decide to counteract their intuition. Personally, I generally go with my gut feeling and follow my heart in my everyday life, but there have been occasions where my friends have engaged in questionable behavior in which I have participated. The difference between my experiences and those of Hughes is that my decisions to ignore my gut feeling have not had major consequences, and although they cause me to be temporarily uneasy, I easily forget about them within a few days. For Hughes, the inability to see Christ and lying about his transformation became a primary source of sorrow and discontent, and therefore was a much more serious rejection of intuition.

The one time I really went against my gut was last summer during a camp. My friends and I decided to go into Providence for some midday shopping, and on the way back we looked for a bus. Despite some protest from myself and a good Samaritan we took this bus. As a result, my friends and I ended up 10 miles out of town and my phone was dead. My experience was somewhat similar to Hughes in that peer pressure forced me to act, but I never lied or felt bad about it which shows a considerable difference.

Yes, one time I was with my friend at her cabin, and there was a collapsed tree that was laying just above the creek. She was quick to walk out to the edge and jump in to the creek. She called for me to follow, saying "it's fun!" I knew deep down that I had a terrible sense of balance, and I looked at the sharp rocks laying down below. However, to appease my friend, I took a step out on to the tree. Suddenly, my fears were confirmed and I fell very less than gracefully to the rocks, leaving a bruise the size of a softball on my leg.

My experience was similar because I regretted my decision the next day.
