Welcome to AP English 11. Every day, you will log into this journal and will be expected to complete two different activities:
1. SAT vocabulary words are important! You will learn two new words a day. I will give you the definition, and you will respond to each journal by using the words in a sentence form. You must use context clues in each sentence. For example, if I do not know the word, I should be able to figure out what it means by reading your sentence. If you would like to hear the pronunciation, click on the link.
2. A warm up activity will be presented. This will change daily.

Activity: Based on inferences, RHETORICAL most nearly means repetitive. If a statement is rhetorical, it often has lost much of its original meaning and significance. However, if something is done or said rhetorically, that may also cause someone to remember words or actions that they hear often, which they can then apply to their own lives.
Once excited by the prospect of a prolonged and heavy snowstorm, the students soon were disappointed when the precipitation proved to be EPHEMERAL and melted away just as quickly as it arrived.

Rhetorical means something that is supposed to be thought/answered in your head. Like if someone is asking a rhetorical question, an answer out loud does not need to be given.

Rhetorical writing is writing that answers something.
Ephemeral- The feeling of falling you get when sleeping is ephemeral, unlike a Charley Horse that lasts forever.

Activity: I believe “rhetorical” means a response or an answer to something without the intention for further discussion.
1) Ephemeral - The student's excitement for her new classes was ephemeral as she quickly figured out who was in her classes.
