The author's purpose in the passage is to point out the everyday words we use that make no sense and complicate the language, a native speaker does not notice these oddities.

The authors purpose was to educate the reader on how the English language can be very condescending. Lederer describes the English language to be confusing and have opposite meanings to what it actually means. He wants to show the reader that just because a word sounds like it means something doesn't necessarily mean that exact thing.

By listing examples, such as how there is no egg in eggplant, they expressed how random they feel our language is. Through humorous representations of the mix and match patterns in English, they showed how incorrect the language is. This made me realize how hard it must be for other origins to learn English.

The author's purpose in writing this is two-fold. First, he is trying to make us think. We often go about our everyday lives without stopping to pause how unusual and complex our language is, but when we examine it more closely, we realize that English can be rather confusing at times. Secondly, the author is attempting to use humor and specific examples to be satirical and make fun of the English language. By examining the exemplification that he uses, readers begin to understand that English is a "silly language" and that it is extremely challenging for non-native speakers to learn it. On simpler terms, though, Lederer is simply trying to be entertaining, and he certainly succeeded in accomplishing this task.

After reading the paper I understood the authors purpose as to make fun of the English language or more specifically our idioms and sayings. Yes, the English language has some things that don't make sense but a large amount of the authors examples were idioms or sayings. They don't mean what they say literally but instead serve a different purpose.

The authors purpose was to emphasize just how confusing the English language is. We don't realize how confusing our own language is until we really think about what we are saying. To outsiders just learning English they are most likely overwhelmed because of how confusing it really is.

The author is trying to get across his point that some words that we use everyday wouldn't make sense if we were to make them into a verb form. For example the author states, "A person shopping for groceries doesn't groce." The author is also making it sound funny and is making us think about how weird some of the words we use in the English language really are.
